PHILOSOPHY
OF THE LEARNING CENTER
We
believe that every person can learn new processes and acquire new information
and that the process of learning is as important as the technique and
result.
We believe that the learner is in control of the learning process and that
the tutor is a guide, coach, and motivator.
We believe that learning is influenced by the student's knowledge, confidence,
attitudes, and activities. All assistance is based on this belief.
We believe in the learners' abilities to solve their own problems with minimal
help from tutors. We encourage students to become self-regulated learners.
We believe that our tutors are an integral part of our program; they promote
dialog and exploration wherein learning can take place.
We believe that competence in a field comes through exploration and that errors
indicate to the tutor how a learner is processing new material.
We believe that errors are indicators of the discrepancy between what is known
and what is unknown. They are clues to what is being learned and are to be
expected and accepted. We understand that learning can take place as a result
of these errors.
We believe that tutors, teachers, and Learning Support Services personnel are
part of an academic team to help students maximize their potential.
