The University
of Akron Wayne College in Orrville will be hosting its fifth annual Writers Workshop, Saturday, April 12, 2008.
The workshop allows writers and aspiring writers to meet published authors and participate in sessions about poetry writing, culinary writing, travel writing, memoir writing, short story writing and writing for publication.
As a participant, you will enjoy a continental breakfast followed by our authors' concurrent workshop sessions, a panel discussion with the presenting authors, and a luncheon with special guest Will Greenway.
Each
of the workshop sessions runs 75 minutes (session
topics are detailed in
the brochure). Please choose two
sessions
to attend. Your $30 fee covers everything for the day.

Featured Speaker: William Greenway
The Writing Life, a Poet’s View
Hard Work, Long Hours, Harsh Criticism, and Regular
Rejection: the Happy Life of the Modern Poet (modern writer)
Will Greenway’s ninth full-length collection, Everywhere at Once, is forthcoming from The University of Akron Press Poetry Series, which also published Ascending Order, winner of the 2004 Ohioana Poetry Book of the Year Award.
Greenway has won the Helen and Laura Krout Memorial Poetry Award, the Larry Levis Editors’ Prize from Missouri Review, the Open Voice Poetry Award from The Writer’s Voice, the State Street Press Chapbook Competition, and an Academy of American Poets Prize. He has also been named the Georgia Author of the Year. Greenway is currently Distinguished Professor of English at Youngstown State University.

Workshop Sessions:
Publishing 101 - Amy Freels
This session is appropriate for those interested in publishing their work or the publishing process. The workshop covers the step-by-step process of getting published, including what to look for in a publisher, and what publishers want in a submission. The nuts and bolts of the publication process will also be discussed. Participants will have opportunity to ask questions and discuss publishing issues related to their writing interests and/or experiences.
Biography: Amy Freels handles design and production for The University of Akron Press. She is also a cofounder of Rager Media, a new publishing venture based in Akron that specializes in literary fiction and poetry.
Poetry Writing - Will Greenway* (Featured Speaker)
William Stafford famously said, “The poet is someone who finds opportunities to do with language things you wouldn’t have done if you hadn’t started writing.” We will demonstrate the validity of that theory in the workshop. During this session, students will learn to write a poem on the spot!
Keeping a Travel Journal - Doris Larson
Learn to keep notes from travel to use for your personal journal, family history, fiction, poetry, and travel articles. Class discussion and short writing exercises.
Writing Memoir: Honoring the Women
in Our Lives - Doris Larson
Your life is full of untold stories. Come to this workshop to learn how to begin to tell your story. Bring pen, paper and memories of women who have impacted your life.
Biography: Doris Larson has authored two travel books. She was the first place recipient of the 2005 Mark Twain Travel Award for her second book, Great Inn Getaways from Cleveland. Her work has appeared in Northern Ohio Live, Cleveland Magazine, Long Weekends, Best Driving Vacations, Lake Erie Living, Marco Polo, Country Living. Doris founded an annual spring retreat for women writers at Punderson Manor Resort.
The Short Story: Developing Character
and Place - Sarah Willis
In this class we will discuss the development and portrayal of character and place
in short stories. How can you show character and place with the least amount of
words? How does one affect the other? What influences make your characters who
they are? There will be short writing exercises and time for questions.
Biography: Sarah Willis’ novel, Some Things That Stay was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and won the Stephen Crane Award for First Fiction 2000.
Her other novels are The Rehearsal, A Good Distance, and The Sound of Us. She
has had short stories published in Book Magazine, The Tampa Review, The Missouri
Review, Confrontation, Amazon.com short stories, and various other magazines.
She also writes book reviews for The Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Pen and Plate: Culinary Journalism -
Laura Taxel
This session is appropriate for students and adults interested in the field of
professional food writing. The focus will be on how to get started and succeed
as a food writer. Taxel will share the story of her own career, talk about how she
developed the skill set needed for culinary journalism, and offer practical tips
about finding, pitching, and writing food stories for newspapers and magazines.
Everyone will participate in a short writing exercise and have an opportunity to
ask questions.
Biography: Laura Taxel has been writing about food and travel for 25 years.
She’s a regular contributor to Cleveland Magazine, Sante, and Continental. She is
the founder and editor of Feast! the magazine of food and fine living for northeast
Ohio. Taxel’s book Cleveland Ethnic Eats is a bestselling guide to the authentic
ethnic restaurants and markets of greater Cleveland. Her work was selected for
The Best Food Writing in 2004 and 2006. She has also received multiple awards
for excellence in journalism from The Press Club of Cleveland.
