PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Health Care Office Management
The health care office manager is a key contributor to a medical practice and a valued employee to the physicians. Areas of responsibility include personnel, operations management, computer system, accounts receivable/accounts payable, financial planning, and marketing. The office manager is also responsible for planning, coordinating, and administering policies and procedures related to the medical practice. Wayne College offers an associate degree program designed to prepare health care office employees for technical, supervisory, or management positions. Graduates will be trained for the daily operation and general management of the health care practice with a special emphasis on medical coding and billing.

Medical Billing
Medical billing personnel are responsible for patient billing and basic accounting systems used in health care services. The individual responsible for medical billing needs to understand medical terminology, disease conditions, and medical procedures as well as demonstrate competence in medical coding, patient billing, accounting, and specialized computer programs. Wayne College’s medical billing certificate prepares students to work in doctors’ offices, hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, HMO’s, medical billing services, and insurance companies. The demand for skilled medical billing personnel is high, and an increasing number of medical coding specialists are working from home as patient records become more computerized.

Medical Transcription
Medical transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other health care professionals and transcribe them into medical reports and correspondence. Employers prefer to hire transcriptionists who have completed postsecondary training in medical transcription including coursework in medical terminology, study of diseases, pharmacology, English grammar and punctuation, keyboarding, and transcription. While medical transcriptionists can work in a variety of health care settings, some enjoy the flexibility of working at home, especially those with previous experience in a hospital or clinical setting. Wayne College’s certificate program trains students for entry-level transcription positions.
