Course Description
This course introduces the Java programming language. Programming techniques are demonstrated through the coding, testing, and debugging of Java applications and applets. JAVA2 SDK will be utilized as the program development platform. Previous programming experience is not required, but knowledge of another language will be very helpful.

Rationale
Programmers in the work place are still very much in demand. One of the most sought after programmers is one who has skill with the JAVA language. JAVA is an object oriented language and has the capability to run on multiple platforms. This course provides a basic working knowledge of the JAVA programming language.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Effectively demonstrate writing of JAVA programs using control structures, methods, arrays, pointers and strings, and classes.
  2. Effectively demonstrate use of Object Oriented Design through the chapters in the textbook.
  3. Effectively demonstrate use of Object Oriented Programming through the chapter in the textbook.
  4. Effectively demonstrate use of JAVA2 SDK through the use of the software as the program development platform.
  5. Integrate a working knowledge of program design techniques when developing JAVA programs.

Instructional Strategies
Topics will be presented with the following format:

  1. Class is administered online. You are expected to check the web classroom at regular and timely intervals for Discussion Circle, Email (Mail Call), and Homepage postings. Submission deadlines must be observed. Attendance on campus is not required.
  2. Project assignments, participation activities, quizzes, and supplemental material will be posted in the web classroom.
  3. You are expected to read, understand, and learn all material in the assigned sections of your text.
  4. End-of-chapter self-reviews and programming assignments will provide substantial opportunity for students to apply the material.
  5. Chapter tests will be given to evaluate students’ knowledge and provide immediate feedback.
  6. Discussion areas in WebCT will provide various forums for student questions and class interaction.
  7. The textbook and Multimedia Cyber Classroom CD feature a hands-on, step-by-step approach to learning. Each chapter includes at least one example for you to compile and execute. You are responsible for learning the concepts presented with each programming example.
